After completing studies in Europe and a Cultural Studies degree at Trent University, Ann-Marie Brown began an artistic practice which led her to her chosen medium of encaustic & oil painting.  She’s continued to develop her skill in this difficult medium though workshops and residencies, most recently a residency at the Artsu Studio in Helsinki Finland.

Ann-Marie’s oil and encaustic paintings have been exhibited across Canada & the United States, and acquired for private, public, and corporate collections including the Senvest Collection and the permanent collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art.  Her paintings have been featured as cover art for literary journals including Crannog, The Antigonish Review, and Pulp Literature, and in films, most notably in Dan Zukovic’s award winning Dark Arc “A tale about love, lust, art, and the power of the charged image”.

Encaustic Works 2012 curated by Joanne Mattera, author of the seminal book The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary included her as one of the most exciting artists working in encaustic today.

According to Ingrid Hollander of the Orange Art Gallery in Ottawa, “Ann-Marie Brown’s lush oil and encaustic paintings are an invitation to linger”. If you accept the invitation, the painting indeed becomes a presence that emerges from the canvas. Brown creates an experience for the viewer: the painting reads you, opens something inside you like haiku.
